A Biplane is an early type of plane with two pairs of wings, one above the other.
The original biplane gliders were designed to grant stiffness and resistance to the structure whilst granting lightweight,with the counter of having a higher drag thus flying slower and having a lower stall speed.
The first successful motorized biplane,the Wright flyer,was flown in December the 17th 1903.
In 1918 after the first world war,the engines' power starting rising and the slower speed previously being an acceptable factor became more relevant due to the drag penalty given by the struts,wires and interferencing airflows,thus the biplane design was being slowly abandoned,and became definitively obsolete in 1930.
Sport aerobatics biplanes are still occasionally made.
