Bob-ombs are sentient, wind-up bomb enemies from the Super Mario franchise. They often attack in Mario games by running towards a target and exploding. They appear as Guest Objects in the Wii U and European 3DS versions of Scribblenauts Unlimited.

They have 40 HP, deal 5 HP of damage with normal attacks, and 200 HP with their explosions.

Like other Nintendo guest objects, Bob-ombs cannot have adjectives applied to them, and cannot be edited with the Object Editor.

Behavior[]

Bob-ombs become hostile when they see Mario, Luigi, Toads, Yoshis, or the Player. When this happens, the Bob-omb activates itself, expresses the emotion, and runs up to it's target. After a short time the Bob-omb explodes, all in an attempt to take it's target with it. Bob-ombs are neutral to all other NPCs and won't attack them unless they are provoked.

Mario and Luigi are scared of Bob-ombs and run away from them, which typically allows them to escape the Bob-omb's explosion. On the other hand, Toad and Yoshi are not scared of Bob-ombs and as a result frequently die because they make no attempts to move away from them.

Bob-omb explosions are extremely powerful, dealing 200 points of damage and destroying most objects that are caught in the blast. The explosion isn't that large however, and is not that difficult to avoid. Enemies from the Mario series are not immune to Bob-omb explosions, and they're strong enough to kill even Bowser at full health.

Similar to normal Bombs, Bob-ombs can be manually activated by interacting with them. Unlike bombs though, they do not explode on contact with fire.

While Bob-ombs are neutral to standard NPCs, they will attack them if they are provoked. Oddly, when this happens, Bob-ombs don't explode, and instead fight with standard attacks while continuing to express the emotion. These attacks are identical to those of generic unarmed NPCs, and have no animation whatsoever. This behavior may have been an unintentional oversight by the developers, especially since the wrong emotion seems to be used.

Trivia[]

  • Bob-ombs are the only Nintendo Guest Object that try to directly harm the player.
  • Bob-omb explosions being able to harm other Mario series enemies is very common in Mario games, to the point where using Bob-ombs against groups of enemies is often encouraged.
  • Bob-omb explosions are the same size as a "medium" explosion, using the terminology seen in the Object Editor.
