Scribblenauts Remix is a remake of Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts for iOS and Android devices. developed by 5TH Cell and ported by Iron Galaxy Studios. Version 1.0 was released on October 11th, 2011 for iOS and Android on April 10th, 2013.
History[]
Scribblenauts Remix was leaked in August 2011 when it was discovered that Warner Bros. had registered a website domain titled www.ScribblenautsRemix.com, before the official announcement.[1] Nothing was gathered from the leak, however, except for the title of the game, with many fans and media outlets speculating if it was supposed to be a new game or if the name remix suggested it was a collection of the previous two, possibly for the newly released 3DS system.
Scribblenauts Remix was surprise announced two months later on October 11, 2011 and was revealed to be a mobile game for iOS devices, becoming available for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4/4S and iPod third and fourth generations later the same day for $4.99.[2]
One month later, in November 2011, the price of the game was permanently reduced from $4.99 to $0.99, causing Remix to temporarily overtake Angry Birds as the #1 app on the App Store.[3]
In November 2012, Jeremiah Slaczka was asked about the possibility of an Android release during an Reddit AMA and responded, "As for Android, we've always considered it, so we'll see in the future." [4] Scribblenauts Remix was released for Android devices on June 19, 2013[5], following a teaser image featuring Maxwell standing next to a green android,[6]
At some point (likely around Scribblenauts Unlimited's mobile release in 2015), the app icon and in-game splash screen were updated to feature a new render of Maxwell.[7]
Scribblenauts Remix was delisted from the Google Play Store at an unknown date and no longer works with devices running Android 14 or higher; however, as of May 2025, it is still available on the iOS App Store and is fully playable on iOS 18.
Updates[]
Following Remix's release, the first significant update was the addition of Scribble Speak in December 2011. Initially exclusive to the iPhone 4S, this feature allowed users to use their voice instead of the keyboard when spawning words.[8] Throughout 2012, various seasonal updates were released to coincide with holidays such as Easter and Christmas. The first of these updates, released in February, celebrated both Valentine's Day and the milestone of one million downloads on the App Store. It included a free Valentine's Day-themed background for the sandbox mode and updated the app icon with pink hearts to match the holiday.[9] Additional holiday updates were released in 2012 celebrating Easter, the back-to-school season, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. [10][11][12][13][14]
In June 2012, version 2.0 was released. This update brought back avatars from the DS games and introduced the World Pass, a $0.99 DLC that all levels past World 5 would be locked behind. Worlds 6, 7, and 8 were included with the World Pass at launch and buying it guaranteed players access to future worlds as they were released.[15] Some of the holiday updates featured avatar packs sold for $0.99 and new worlds, along with the free sandbox backgrounds. For example, World 9 was added in the Back to School update, and monster-themed avatars appeared in the Halloween update. Twelve worlds were released as part of the World Pass, alongside the five included in the base game, for a total of 17 worlds and 170 levels.
Gameplay[]
Scribblenauts Remix contains most of the gameplay features from Super Scribblenauts, including adjectives, however, some features, such as the Level Editor were not included. The levels are mostly taken from Super Scribblenauts, with a few from the first game, remade to include adjective support as well as ten new exclusive levels. A new sandbox mode on the title screen comes with a selection of backgrounds, with some being based on annual US holidays. Additional backgrounds can also be purchased for $0.99 as DLC. Avatars have also been included in a limited fashion, with four included free with the game: Maxwell, God, Lifeguard and Lily. Same with the backgrounds; additional avatars can be purchased in themed packs for $0.99 each, or you can buy them all in a bundle for $2.99.
In order to prevent kids from making in-app purchases without parental permission, players have to solve a simple math problem before they can buy any of the DLC.
Differences[]
Scribblenauts Remix contains several differences from the original DS releases of Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts:
- The item limit isn't as obvious as in the DS games, with no visual meter. Instead, the notebook appears grayed out when you reach the limit and won't let you open it until at least one object is deleted.
- Sound effects from items that make noise were inconsistently removed. Interacting with a musical instrument or other item that usually plays a sound effect will cause a visual to appear, suggesting it should be making noise but no effect will play. Some sound effects, such as explosions and gunfire, were kept, however.
- Likely due to hardware limitations, the dictionary from Super Scribblenauts was not ported over in it's entirety. Some objects are not available, such as many suits, transportation objects and weapons.
- In-game achievements are included instead of merits, courtesy of Apple's Game Center service.
- Instead of buying hints with Ollars, hints are automatically unlocked after waiting thirty seconds. Time spent in menus, including Maxwell's notebook, will not count towards those thirty seconds.
- This change was carried over into all future games, with Ollars being permanently removed.
- Players still collect Ollars after completing levels. However, Ollars no longer serve a purpose, as along with the hint change, both avatars and backgrounds are purchased with real money through microtransactions instead.
Reception[]
Scribblenauts Remix gained a mainly favorable response, with 86% on Metacritic, 9/10 from IGN and 4/5 on iTunes. The comments have been mainly positive, with a few complaining about bugs they found in the game.
Bugs/Glitches[]
- CRASH: When clicking on the grey notebook, the game crashes.
- CRASH: Spawning Mike Uziel crashes the game. (Patched)
- CRASH: Putting a gas can on top of a fire and waiting crashes the game.
