Starites serve as the main collectible of the Scribblenauts series, and often appear as either level goals or are given as rewards for completing missions. They are magical objects said to be born from the happiness of others and are known to hold great power.

Being the main collectible, players cannot spawn their own Starites. Attempting to spawn one will instead create a "Toy" Starite that doesn't do anything.

Appearance[]

A Starite resembles a yellow five-pointed star, which has a small yellow dot floating disconnected in between each of its points. The Starite was originally lighter and more angular, but was redesigned slightly to have a more rounded appearance starting in Scribblenauts Unlimited.

Starites emit a small amount of light, and give off a constant sparkling effect.

In level 10-5 of Super Scribblenauts, a unique, animated Starite appears.

Gameplay[]

Scribblenauts[]

In Scribblenauts, Starites serve as the main collectable in the areas Maxwell visits, but don't exhibit many other attributes.

There are 231 Starites to be found in the original game.

Super Scribblenauts[]

Starites serve a similar purpose in Super Scribblenauts, being collected in each of the game's constellations, though in the level 10-5 the collected Starites are used to attack the Doppelganger.

There are a total of 122 Starites in Super Scribblenauts.

Scribblenauts Unlimited[]

In Scribblenauts Unlimited Maxwell now sets off to collect Starites in order to save his sister Lily, who has been cursed and is slowly turning to stone. Instead of earning a Starite at the end of each level, Starites are earned for completing "missions" within each level, with multiple being found within each level. These consist of larger missions, which contain multiple objectives and reward an entire Starite upon completion, as well as several minor objectives which reward Starite Shards. These Starite Shards are fragments of a Starite, and collecting 10 of them allows a full Starite to be reformed.

In the original version of Scribblenauts Unlimited there are a total of 106 Starites, including the Starite Shards. This was raised to 112 in the Scribblenauts Mega Pack, due to the addition of extra levels.

Scribblenauts Unmasked[]

In Scribblenauts Unmasked, Maxwell and Lily use Lily's magic globe to travel to Gotham City in the DC Comics universe, only to accidentally break the globe in the process. They are tasked with collecting the lost Starites to restore power to Lily's globe so they can return home. Normal tasks in Scribblenauts Unmasked no longer reward Starites, and instead reward RP. However, each level in the game contains a larger mission, which rewards a Starite once it is completed.

In the original version of Scribblenauts Unmasked there are only 12 Starites to collect, one for every level. This was raised to 14 in the Scribblenauts Mega Pack, as two extra levels were added.

Scribblenauts Showdown[]

Traditional Starites do not appear at all in Scribblenaut Showdown. Instead, they function as a currency that can be earned and spent by various means.

Behavior[]

Starites are stationary and cannot move. However, they can be manipulated either to make obtaining it easier or harder. For example, a Starite will roll if pushed and can be attached to things using rope-like objects.

Prior to Scribblenauts Unlimited, Starites only had 100 HP, and could be destroyed in various ways, such as by being blown up, burnt, or lost down a hole. Many "action" stages in Scribblenauts use this, challenging Maxwell to obtain the Starite without breaking it. It is mainly threatened by steel balls, pits, and spikes, which instantly break it. This was changed starting in Scribblenauts Unlimited, where Starites were made invincible.

When Maxwell collects a Starite, he will pick it up and play his "Cheer" or "Celebrate" animation depending on the game. (However, this will not happen if Maxwell collects it right as he dies.)

Glitches[]

Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix[]

If a Starite is made pregnant in these games, it will produce a baby Starite. Attempting to collect this will crash the game. This does not happen if the Starite is cloned, as this instead produces a toy Starite.

Scribblenauts Unlimited[]

In Scribblenauts Unlimited it's possible for players to spawn real Starites into levels using glitches. These can be very useful and allow for players to clear missions instantly, but can also easily cause the game to crash or become softlocked if they are used improperly.

One glitch that allows this to be done is to store a Starite in the Magic Backpack, which is done by attaching one end of a ropelike object to the Starite, and dragging the other end to the Magic Backpack. The other glitch is using the "$" Method to create a "$Starite."

If multiple real Starites exist in a level at once, only the first one functions, and the remaining Starites will crash the game if collected. Additionally, if a Starite is collected when the player isn't in a Starite mission, the game will either crash or become softlocked after the jingle plays and the player character cheers, due to the "Starite Get" screen failing to load.

Additionally, the previous crashing glitch from Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix has been fixed, as pregnant Starites now no longer produce babies.

Trivia[]

  • Scribblenaut NPCs will try to guard Starites.
  • In Scribblenauts Unlimited, Maxwell collected Starites to remove Lily's curse. However, it's unclear if Starites are actually able to remove curses in this manner.
    • Specifically, the line "The glow wasn't coming from the Starites though, it was coming from..." suggests the Starites likely had little effect on the game's outcome.
  • Starites are said to power Lily's globe. In Scribblenauts Unmasked.
  • The Starites seen in the menu of Scribblenauts Showdown have their design slightly altered, lacking the five "dots" outside of the star shape itself.
    • It's possible this denotes its use as a currency, as the toy Starite object still uses the original design when created in-game, and the Mega Pack also uses the original design.
  • In the minigame Getting Fishy! in Scribblenauts Showdown, a Christmas Tree Anglerfish can appear that uses a Starite as a lure.
  • The Starites were loosely inspired by the collectible stars in Super Mario 64.[1]
