Water is a common level element found in the Scribblenauts series. It is usually used as an obstacle for the player, requiring certain objects or methods to traverse.
Behaviour[]
Pre-Unlimited[]

A shark being killed by a battery in Scribblenauts.
In Scribblenauts, Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix, water was used as a obstacle. In Scribblenauts, Maxwell was unable to dive underwater without the proper equipment; in some cases, he would start drowning after ten seconds. The same applies to land animals. Electrical objects also will short out upon contact, causing them to either stop working or explode.
The Level Editor has water zones available to be placed in your custom levels. There are also some objects that come with water, such as moats and oceans; these can only be placed in the ground,
Post-Unlimited[]
Scribblenauts Unlimited and Scribblenauts Unmasked change the water mechanic. Maxwell can dive underwater without equipment, and most creatures can breathe underwater, so it's mostly used as a level decoration. Electrical objects will not explode, but they will still kill living creatures nearby, and land vehicles will stop working when placed underwater. The newly-added Drain makes it possible for the player remove water from the levels, but the water will return upon reentering the level.

Water makes an appearance throughout each of the games. Levels that feature water include:
